Hey Walker: I'm still waiting for you to enlighten us on the benefits the union has brought to public education. FYI, a 1948 HS diploma represents a higher level of education than a current undergraduate degree. Something of which the AFT/NEA can be proud. And, please, try not to "shoot the messenger" but rather just respond to the points of the argument. Please list the things that benefit our children, and make them competitive in the global marketplace. And I wait....
From the above article; "I realized I had unintentionally led my students to conclude that if we believed something to be unfair and took action, the unfair situation would turn into a fair one. I remembered saying over and over: ‘There is always something you can do to try to turn the unfair situation into a fair one.’ " Lilly, this does not sound like a lesson in reading or writing. It is something that should be taught by parents, not elementary school teachers. This teacher has wasted valuable learning time with her political viewpoint....and that is the issue. Sheesh! Regarding your perception of teaching; 1) When a class writes letters, they are NOT learning, they are practicing. 2) It is only a legitimate lesson if each...
Walker: Since you brought up unions.... Please explain how the union benefits the students in the public school system. Please tell us how the union creates incentive for teachers to earn better salaries. Please let us know how the union ensures "highly qualified educators" stand in front of our children in class. Perhaps there are other educational systems that do a better job, and we should look to emulate those systems....but I think you'll find the union absent from those systems.
So this is why I get such outrageous answers when I ask my HS seniors "why is the sky blue?". (#1 response - because the oceans reflect the sunlight into the sky) K-6 teachers, please stick to the basics. My boss expects me to fix all your mistakes by the time my seniors graduate. Stop wasting time....and the students grey matter...on anything other than reading, writing, and 'rithmatic.

Is Health Care a Right?

GG writes "right to life
Right to life encompasses the right to the healthcare necessary to maintain life, paid for by American citizens as part of the right to live in America. Otherwise, we are back to Dickensian time, relying on Ebenezer Scrooge to save Tiny Tim's life."

That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Using your logic, then, the right to bear arms encompasses the right to the equipment necessary to maintain that right, paid for by American citizens as part of the right to live in America. Really??? Maybe we should insist congress buy us all guns (since I can actually find this "right" in the Constitution)

GG, you can have all the healthcare you can pay for, and it's OK if Bill Gates gets better...
Yes and Yes!
It amazes me that "scientists" can cling (bitterly, I assume) to their assumptions in the face of overwhelming contrary data.

Facts: CO2 dissolves in water. The soulubility of CO2 in water is not constant. CO2 has greater solubility in cold water than in hot water. Therefore, as water warms (and ice melts), CO2 is released.

This is why the Vostok Ice Core Data shows an 800 year lag between temperature and CO2 concentration levels.

In the face of this one fact, all of AGW theory goes out the window.

Regarding Hal's comment of there being more ice on the poles 100, 200 or 300 years ago...what the heck, Hal, keep on going...20,000 years ago the ice cap was covering all of Canada, too. Geez! My ninth graders...
