An Open Letter to American Jews

Mr Shapiro,

I was excited when I began reading your article, as I thought I could forward it to our fellow Jews who are clearly misguided in their support of the current administration.

There are legitimate reasons Jews both in Israel and America should be, at minimum, concerned with the actions and attitudes of the president. I do what I can to help them see this whenever the opportunity presents. I forward ever reasonable, sensible, substantial article I find on the subject that clearly demonstrates the crisis we are facing, to those who are so obviously blind to it. I cannot however forward yours.

Those who are in accord with your feelings will undoubtedly praise what you have written here. Those who see things...

Nothing can be built on something that is "living" and "breathing". something that "changes with the times". Anything built upon something of that nature would surely crumble.

How difficult is it to understand that the Constitution is fixed, it is concrete, it is the foundation upon which this country was built. If it were open to free interpretation, it would fail to serve it's purpose.

If, after having to sacrifice, struggle, and fight, the founding fathers who went to the trouble of writing the constitution, believed it best to have 9 "wise" people determine the law of the land, they would have said so.

The founding fathers were far wiser than we and knew first hand of the deleterious affects an all powerful...
The constitution provides for three SEPARATE but EQUALLY POWERFUL branches of government. In doing so a system of checks and balances was supposed to be created. That is the fundamental structure on which the government of our great country was created.

The obvious arm twisting the Obama administration embarked on to gain the votes necessary to pass the fundamentally flawed, unconstitutional HCR bill was a gross overstep by the president.

His current practice of campaigning for those who violated their constitutional oath and ignored their constituents to advanced his socialistic agenda is amongst the most violative acts Obama has engaged in as president.

What happened to SEPARATION of power? The lines have not...

If all the people in all the land read Mr. Sowell's substantive writing they might come to see the wisdom and truth in his words.

There remains a strong possibility that some (perhaps many), even when aware of his insights, may fail to appreciate the message.

More concerning to me is the fact that people fail to realize, recognize, and appreciate, that, at the beginning and the end of the day, independent of everything and anything, they are responsible for their own choices.

After surviving life in a concentration camp Viktor E. Frankl said

"The last of human freedoms - the ability to chose one's attitude in a given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way."

When faced with a problem there are...
It seems to me you are missing the forest for the trees here.

The bigger issue here is not about people are lacking a work ethic, it's about people lacking a life ethic.

Those who appreciate life as the amazing gift it truly is, who recognize that simply being alive brings great potential, value that and strive to realize whatever their potential may be.

Those are the people who undoubtedly demonstrate the "work ethic" you lament in your article.

Those who look at the world around them and ask themselves why they are where they are and search for someone to blame, will spend their time worrying about the same.

Those who see life as a burden, or something merely to endure, will undoubtedly accept...

You make an excellent point.

All one has to do to is try to really understand something to realize the truth behind the assertion that the more you know, the more you realize you don't know. I take great pains to learn about that which interests me, and find myself left with a growing list of seemingly unanswerable questions ... it's a quandary.

Those who claim to have it all figured out (and want everyone to know) are astoundingly frightening, as it's clear they haven't a clue.

Bertrand Russell noted "Many people would rather die than think. In fact they do."

The good news is, there are also people like you. Cheers Oldprof!

Thank you Mr. Sowell for continuing to demonstrate, with each and every post that brilliant reasonable men still exist (at least one ;)).

If you would, could, ever find it in your heart to be so selfless and courageous as to be willing to take on the charge of leading this country, and I so wish you would, you've got my vote.

It's unfortunate those currently in power don't embrace the wisdom you share so freely.

Thank you ... (and seriously, please, consider running in 2012)
Abraham Lincoln said "You can not build character and courage by taking away a man's initiative and independence."

While I agree Obama seeks to relieve people of their responsibility, I believe his intent is far more insidious than represented here.

To live a meaningful, satisfying life, people need to be needed, they need to have purpose.

Apparently Obama needs to feel needed by millions, and therefore infantilizes them with the implication that they are incapable of taking care of, or doing better for, themselves.

This is not commendable, it is reprehensible.

He is trying to satisfy his obvious narcissism by creating a society dependent on him, on his "benevolence". If he weren't President it...

Have you no shame man?

Suggesting an apology is due because someone was expressing their opinion with emotion ... really?

You undermine your position when you refer to his protest as "harassment" and do it further injury when you state "I believe Rev. Clever was actually called the “N” word.".

What leads you to believe this? Not one person has produced any evidence to support that claim. What happened to innocent until proven guilty? Perhaps it's your own sensitivity at work here, it was alleged and it's awful, so, in your eyes, it must be true (lame).

Suggesting honest Americans who share common ground in their want to return to the fundamentals on which this country was founded and built, craft their...

I, for one, wish Obama would STOP TALKING! Blah, Blah, Blah ... that's all it sounds like to me these days. His words bare little relation to his actions. That is, until he lets a truth or two slip in.

Here's one that caught my eye:
"...we can ... strengthen the middle class and achieve a shared and lasting prosperity"

Adding credence to the assertion (or observation) that Obama is a socialist, is this striking statement. He wants to achieve a shared prosperity? So much for the American dream of freedom to realize individual prosperity. Under Obama we now get to work & share (welcome to Cuba).

He wants to strengthen a class? As opposed to empowering individuals to realize as much success as they can leaving them...
