Thanks for an informative column. By and large, cultural conservatives view history & the social landscape through the prism of human imperfection. Without getting into my Christian worldview, it is EMPIRICALLY obvious that human nature is fallible, at times irrational, and frequently shortsighted. It astounds me that liberals still believe in the perfectability of Man, and cannot see the past & potential consequences of so many of their ideas, programs & policies.

Irving Kristol, who passed away last week at the age of 89, was like everyone's favorite uncle -- if the uncle were a transformative intellectual of empyrean stature. He was both a warm and approachable human being and a penetrating social critic. He was, in a very American way, a practical man, and his approach to ideas was always firmly and refreshingly reality-based.
