I believe it was Clinton who personally got involved to get the sentence stopped, the US put pressure on Singapore but it didn't bow to the US demands (some of which bordered on blackmail)but did reduce the lashes from 6 to 4.

Once back in the US, he was arrested for drugs, getitng in a fight with his dad, and a host of other things. He claimed it was because of post trauma from Singapore, the truth wa she was a punk before he went there, when he was there and after he was there. I lost track of him in the late 1990s, I wonder what prison he is in now?
