As part of my PHD program, I took a class in emergency management and we went over to the county emergency mgt. center in the bowels of the county government complex and got a tour from the director of emergency management for that county and he told us a joke about a new emergency manager coming on and the out going manager giving him basically an orientation.

He was told if he faced an emergency to open the safe and there were three envelopes numbered one, two and three. So soon after there was an emergency and he went to the safe and opened the envelope labeled #1--inside was a piece of paper that said "BLAME YOUR PREDECESSOR." So sure enough he did and the emergency passed, soon after another emergency hit and he went back to...

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab may have done us a favor. More than eight years after 9/11/01, he revealed that our multi-billion dollar airport security system doesn't work.

It doesn't work because it was conceptualized as a search for weapons -- or anything that might be used as a weapon. On Christmas Day you can bet TSA agents confiscated plenty of nail files and toothpaste, even if they did miss the explosives in Umar's undershorts.
