Media Wake-Up Call for Parents

while there should be limits on what and how much children should watch, Saving Private Ryan and Glory were both rated-R. I watched Bruce Lee films as a youth. It depends on the film. Not all R-rated films are the same and some are suitable for some children to see and without the desire to "clean them up" as some wacko conservative groups attempted to do when Private Ryan was shown on network TV--Spielberg refused to allow an edited version to be shown and some ABC outlets refused to show it in fear these wackos would file complaints with the FCC and they'd face fines.

The Normandy beach scene is a critical part of the film and showed in some small way what that terrible day was like and something older kids should be exposed to.

I recently attended a middle school band concert. To my amazement, at least one third of the children performing in the various bands sat using their cell phones when not on stage. Astoundingly, many of these pre-teens had expensive sophisticated smartphones that enabled them to browse the Internet as well as text friends. I even noted some youths texting on stage when their instruments were not part of the performance. When it comes to electronic media, things are changing so fast that parents are lagging behind.  Apparently, so too are band directors, teachers and school administrators.
