In 1971, the US could have played hard ball with the UN over the attempt to force Taiwan (as the ROC) out of the UN--"they go, we go." But they didn't. The US-backed the PRC taking the China-seat in the UNSC and the UNGA, but did support the ROC staying in the UNGA, instead the ROC walked out--you can't fire me, I quit!

The US motion wasn't acted on and the ROC (well to be precise the Chiang Kai-shek clique as Resolution 2758 reads)was formally expelled, an organization it help found.

So, Obama is just playing the usual American game in regards to China.
