Black Families Hurt by Magazine's War on Conservatives

The only more abused segment of the population than the "white male" is the black conservative. It's way past time for prominent black athletes, actors and other professional blacks to "come out of the closet" and start making it acceptable to be black and conservative. I believe multitudes of the general population would follow. It's hard to believe it is more acceptable to be a gay male or female than to be a black conservative. Come on RGIII and Tiger Woods - lead your people out of this ugly oppression.

You're living in a fantasy world.

First, blacks don't vote conservative for one reason: They AREN'T conservative!! The secret ballot is secret for a reason. Blacks reveal their true, unhurried preferences with the ballot box, especially when they get to vote for another black.

Second, to the extent that blacks are closet conservatives, it isn't "liberals" (read: white liberals) who are keeping them in the closet. It's other blacks. Peer pressure is powerful.

Finally, the small portion of black "conservatives," upon closer inspection, aren't so conservative anyway. In the past few years, Condoleezza Rice, Colin Powell, J.C. Watts and other blacks have openly supported affirmative action and other egalitarian measures.

The reason Blacks don't like conservatives is all they ever hear is about how racist, redneck, uncle tom and just plain evil conservatives are. To even say you disagree with these attacks is to open yourself for attacks on you. Really, a thinking black man or women has to hide in the shadows. Thinking and trying to get the fact is, "acting white".

That was the point of Elder's column. The most read black mag will never ever put conservatives in a good light. Even the smartest person in the world will get it wrong if all they have is one sided information.

I'll just slightly disagree. If a person of any chosen "protected" group is a conservative, then hell hath no fury than the liberals. Whether the person is black, hispanic or woman, as long as they're conservative, it's open fire.

It's even worse if you have two, or more strikes against you:

Sarah Palin: White conservative woman (one strike)

Clarence Thomas: Black male conservative (two strikes, male, black)

Mia Love: Black female conservative (three strikes)

And you're out at the ol' liberal ball game.

But good thing they're tolerant!

Do you really want Tiger Woods as an example of a black conservative?

You missed the point - the post wasn't about Tiger - it was about prominent black people stating it's OK to be a conservative and to make the Uncle Tom reference as off limits as the "N" word.

Dear Ebony,

I do not have high hopes, given the way Ebony treats black non-liberals, that you will review my new book, "Dear Father, Dear Son: Two Lives, Eight Hours." It is, in the end, about the importance of fathers -- and the damage done to a child who grows up without one.

Why do I know you will ignore my book despite its examination of the most important issue facing "black America"? Your magazine treats black conservatives as if they were the enemy, that they bring nothing valid to the discussion.

Ebony magazine, a monthly staple of American black life...
