I'm not of the opinion that it's a valid function of government to meet the needs of the poor. I think this is the responsibility of the churches and other volunteer organizations. Freedom is essential to the idea of America, which means the freedom to succeed and the freedom to fail. It's not social justice to use the power of the government to redistribute wealth from the successful to the unsuccessful, but the government is certainly entitled to use its authority to remind the successful of their moral obligation to be their brother's keeper.

This recent column of yours only proves my point: our government is broken beyond the normal means of repair, i.e., BOTH political parties are corrupt, in bed with corporate (especially military/defense) interests, and the next election will solve nothing.

Nothing short of revolutionary action will work the will of the People, which, in case you've forgotten, is the source from which our government dervives its authority.
