I remember from MY history classes, that WWII collected newspapers, tin, rubber and anything else they could recycle to pay for that war. When they came back from the war, they took out a mortgage with 20% or more and made sure their monthy payments were less than 25% of their monthly income. And they bought homes that were worth what they paid. They bought cars WITH money down and paid off the car before it was worth nothing. They bought only health insurance they could afford.
