As far as literal readings of the of the Bible, it is certainly true that a literal reading of the New Testament would yield a "harmless nut job." A literal reading of the Old Testament would yield some fairly classic Bronze Age violence.

Neither of the other Abrahamic religions has any significant number of adherents who subscribe to literal understandings of their holy texts that rise to the same level as that of Islamists.
