You hit the nail right on the head. This is not about affordable healthcare for all Americans. That's the PR bumper sticker. Ideologically, this is about gov't wanting to control 1/6 of the economy. This is just one step in their plan to destroy capitalism as we know it. Politically, this is about paying off union bosses who desperately need a single pay system to get them off the hook from the billions in healthcare benefits they've promised their members but can't deliver. It would be a HUGE victory for unions, only everyone else will have to suffer and pay for it. (Another dirty little secret that reid and pelosi won't even mention in their rosey news conferences.) The public option is just a step forward to the real objective...
It's been reported that the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office has released its scoring of the health care overhaul bill that Harry Reid has brought to the Senate, saying that it will cost $849 billion over the first ten years after its enactment. 

The CBO has not released the full text yet, so it's difficult to know what is accurate about the score and what may be misleading. However, Peter Suderman at Reason offered something to keep in mind with the CBO score:
