Too much "empire building" because "timely information" is not timely between agencies and entities of the Federal Government. There are offices within DOD that "mirror" some DOJ agencies in scope and information (FBI for example) but, and this is the reason, will deliver the requested information in minutes, not days or weeks. (Because everything is scrubbed and eye-balled from senior GS and SES employees before going to the political appointees that decide whether or not to release to another Federal entity.) In National Security and Defense matters, information is perishable, and it rots quicker than salad greens left outside on a hot muggy day in D.C.

"Top Secret America," its in-depth, multi-part, two-year investigation into the vast network of government security agencies and private contractors is an eye-opener -- obvious Pulitzer bait. Reporters Dana Priest and William Arkin have revealed a "hidden world, growing beyond control." Within this "alternate geography" of the United States, they found some 1,271 government organizations and 1,931 private companies at work on programs related to counterterrorism, homeland security and intelligence in about 10,000 locations across the United States.
