It's not easy to compete when the government is using your tax dollars to subsidize your competition. Perhaps they give them money for some other part of their business, but they can use those profits to offset the losses necessary to drive you out of business. Then they raise their prices and viola, everybody loses except the crony capitalist.

When my wife was a liberal, she complained that libertarian reasoning is coldhearted. Since markets produce winners and losers -- and many losers did nothing wrong -- market competition is cruel. It must seem so. President Obama used the word "fair" in his last State of the Union address nine times.
