I get into trouble whenever I bring up this topic -- ideas about diversity and tolerance among liberals do not extend to differences of opinion --, but illegitimacy penalizes the b*st*rd child and puts an unnecessary burden on society. It is not the child's fault. But the parents -- so often the father is simply listed as "unknown" -- should be shamed publicly for bringing into the world children that they cannot support, much less guide into proper paths. It is child abuse. All children do better when their parents are actively engaged in their rearing. Just now, Asian-Americans seem to do the best job, and their children are prospering. All parents can either learn the lesson or harbor ethnic grudges.

Yes, you're clearly a racist bigot and judgmental to boot!

There have been any number of studies done that demonstrate the surest way to condemn a child to a life of poverty is to raise him in a single parent home. Between the illegitimacy rate and rampant no-fault divorce, the majority of children now live that way. The unacceptably high rate of single parents not only penalizes the individual child, it removes from society the examples that could help children in single parent homes were there fewer of them.

As an example, in my grade school (early 60s) there was one kid in our class who lived in a single parent home. He had lost his father to cancer. Other Dads in the community picked up the slack and included him in activities along with their own sons. Not every time but often enough so that he had a male influence in his life. Because there were so many Dads around and only 1 "fatherless child,' the rest of the community could pick up the slack.

When there are only a couple of Dads in an entire neighborhood and hundreds of kids with no Dad, there is a problem in that none of those boys will have any role model.

While this is true, it's not the whole answer.

My niece, from Korea, lives with my wife and I. She has been in US schools for 1.5 years and just flat-out destroys her classmates on tests. No ESL for her, either. She consistently out performs American (regardless of race) students because she PUTS OUT SOME EFFORT. She watches some TV but not much, studies a lot. She beats them in US History and in English class. The bottom line that they don't try and she does so she's kicking their unscholastic butts.
New York City's Stuyvesant High School is one of those all too rare public schools for intellectually outstanding students. Such students are often bored to death in schools where the work is geared to the lowest common denominator, and it is by no means uncommon for very bright students to become behavior problems.

Recent statistics on the students who passed the examination to get into Stuyvesant High School raise troubling questions that are unlikely to receive the kind of serious answers they deserve.

These successful applicants included 9 black students, 24 Latino students, 177 white students and 620 Asian Americans.

Since this is definitely...
