States that have populations that are similar to Europe's -- states like Maine, Vermont, Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana -- have crime rates that are similar to Europe's. States that have populations that are closer to South Africa or Venezuela -- Louisiana or California -- have crime rates that are similar to those in Africa or the Caribbean basin. As I understand it, Britain did not introduce gun control laws until ca. 1950 and crime rates have risen steadily. The more Parliament restricts the right of law-abiding citizens to own guns, the higher the crime rate rises.

The British government begged for firearms at the beginning of WW2 when they thought they were going to be invaded. They had all but abolished them even then.
