It is not just Obama. I had the feeling that Bush 43 was also disengaged from the responsibilities of the presidential office. For all of the many criticisms that can be made of them, other presidents of mediocre mind -- FDR, Truman, Carter and Reagan, for example -- were fully engaged in their duties (well, by the early '40s, perhaps not FDR). Bush 43 and Obama have liked the perks of office, the shambolism of the presidency, but they haven't seemed comfortable doing the sort of work that they should do to earn their keep.
