You can legally own an assault rifle which was manufactured or imported before 1986 if you've paid the $200 tax, submitted your finger prints, have a class 3 firearms license, and have undergone a thorough background investigation by the BATFE and FBI. However, some states, such as California, do NOT allow any ownership of Class 3 firearms, under which any assault rifle would fall. Any full auto firearm is in the Class 3 list. "Assault Weapons" is a made up term to try and describe a semi automatic firearm which looks like a full auto firearm. It was also meant to fool those who are ignorant about firearms. Anything that looks like a machine gun is assumed to be a machine gun by the ill informed general populace. Liberals used that confusion in an attempt to ban a whole new class of firearms. They admitted it publicly.
