The difference I think is better stated as between a democracy,one nation, where all the people get a say in all things, as opposed to a confederated republic, where the states are represented in federal matters that benefit them through combined military strength, laws that bring about harmony between the states, but do not interfere internally in the states, and regulation of commerce, which enables all to prosper through freer intercourse among the states, but does not extend to private citizens.
