Bae's "crime" was taking pictures of some starving children. Since the DPRK attempts to convince everyone, including their own citizens, that everything is going well this is considered an act of war. It wasn't long ago that they put out a news article to their own people trying to insist that the US has more people starving, etc. than they do - and that our citizens have to live in tents (provided by them as free humanitarian aid) due to a lack of housing.

"The spokesman for the Foreign Ministry gave the following answer to a question raised by the Korean Central News Agency Sunday as regards the issue of American Kenneth Bae, sentenced to 15 years in prison for the crimes of plotting the subversion of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK): "Kenneth Bae" was arrested and prosecuted for various crimes he committed in the DPRK aimed at the state subversion."
