I agree with what you said about the Civil War. However, the North desperately NEEDED the South to remain in the U.S.

In the North, their customer base depended upon what the Northern businessmen were willing to pay their workers. (very little). They also needed the Southern agriculture to provide food which was controlled by Congress. The South was switching to tobacco and cotton as crops, which both could be sold in Europe for a lot more than the North was willing to pay for them.

If the South had been allowed to suceed, the Northern businesmen would have lost a big market and could only compete with Europe by giving better prices for the goods they produced and buying their raw materials and food at a higher...

I did not know Thomas Jefferson, and I am no Thomas Jefferson. But Jefferson rightly foresaw that slavery and the question of its morality and expansion would be America's “firebell in the night.” We are still coming to terms today with the awful legacy of slavery in a free land.

However, Islam represents today's “firebell in the night.” The so-called “religion of peace” stands as a small, but growing, presence in America, and its slowly increasing demands for accommodation have thus far generally met with acquiescence and ignorance. One cannot help but wonder how long it will be before America awakens...
