Like most "intellectuals", those in power use the argument, "Yes, people will be harmed by this policy if we make it a law. But any sacrifice is acceptable - as long as we aren't the sacrifice."

So thousands of people will be bankrupt from this oil spill. That is better than allowing people to drill for this dirty crude oil and use it! And they can always find new jobs elsewhere. If they can't, we can take care of them on welfare so there is nothing to worry about, is there? So it kills thousands of fish and birds. We can grow them back with time, especially if we make it illegal to hunt and fish. That's a win-win situation - isn't it? We have to make sure our union friends are happy by refusing to allow any non-union...

At first blush this sounds like an outlandish question with a conspiratorial twist. The corollary question goes like this: Is the Obama administration intentionally scaling back clean-up efforts in the Gulf in an attempt to maximize the damage so Democrats in Congress will have an excuse to take effective control over yet another major sector of our economy and impose crippling and draconian new taxes on the American people?
