I talked with a Swiss gentleman one day not long ago about the differences there and here. One of the biggest was the use of vehicles. His family has a car they use on vacation for two weeks of the year. Otherwise it stays in its garage.

HOWEVER ... they live within half a mile of where they work. He said he knows of no one who lives further. So bicycles are common and so is walking.

Now - how many of you live 1/2 mile from work? I drive 32 miles each day to and from work - and I have one of the shorter commutes in this area. Some people I know drive as much as 75 miles each way every day. Of course there is also no public transportation available.

Just when you thought environmental extremists couldn’t go any further, they surprise you with yet another ploy in their never-ending quest to turn back modernity. With the public push-back on the cap-and-trade scheme and creating man-made droughts to save a 2-inch fish, environmentalists have become craftier in their efforts. Always the vanguard of the latest environmental regulation, California has a new idea for getting polluters out of their cars: get rid of free parking.
