My Thoughts on the Election

On election night, when the Ohio results came in & it was clear the President would get a 2nd term, I felt as if I'd been punched in the stomach & then forced to drink poison. The day after, America didn't feel like America anymore. It seemed like a place where our most cherished ideals had no meaning, & those who most deserved to be rebuked had instead been rewarded, empowered &, worst of all, emboldened in their misguided, reprehensible policies. I was inconsolable because the pain was as great as my love for my country. That was in 2004. Now, finding myself on the other side of the experience, I won't gloat. I understand how bad it feels. We disagree about politics, but as a Christian & an American, I join you in prayer for our nation.

If Obama wins, I'll feel a great deal of relief, and some happiness (but not the elation of 4 years ago -- I can only hope he's learned something from his mistakes during his first term). But I won't do any gloating about it to my Republican friends & co-workers. I remember how horrible I felt 8 years ago when the man I considered to be the worst president of modern times, and a war criminal, won a 2nd term. It was a pain born of love for my country, and I won't rub salt into someb ody else's patriotic wounds. If Romney wins, I'll be avoiding news media for quite a while, and I'll be listening to a lot of Bach.

Most Americans aren't happy with either choice in the upcoming election. I'm an independent. (Demographically, I'm a middle-aged WM, married, college educated, middle-class, church-attending Christian.) This year, I'll be voting, rather half-heartedly, for Obama, but I'll be voting whole-heartedly against the Republican party. I'll be voting against the dangerously irrational, simplistic, cult-like extremism that the party has embraced over the past few years. Whether or not Obama deserves to win, the Republican party deserves to lose.
