gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico blew billions building a commuter rail system that will never show a profit. He also blew 4 1/2 million on a new airplane that will shorten his longest trips in New Mexico by less than 30 minutes. I have ridden on trains, and know numerous people who took a train trip once, just once. A 200 mph train is considered fast. A two hundred mph airplane is considered extremely slow. Why would any sane person want to spend 24 to 36 hours going by rail, when an airliner that goes 600 mph can get them there in 3 hours?

Rapid Rail is Really Just Political Pork

Little boys love to play with trains. It doesn’t stop, even when they grow up and move to Washington. Now the Democrats and Barack Obama are playing with trains and $8 billion of our money to build themselves a nationwide train set just like the Europeans.

It’s not really intended to build anything. Oh, sure, they’ll mouth the words about how wonderful rapid rail could be. As Vice President Joe Biden claimed recently, “it’s a down payment on a truly national program that's going to reshape the way we travel.”
