Obama doesn't really like democracy. He likes the top-down type of government you get in placed like Iran, Cuba, Venezuela,or China. The people have a nasty habit of not toeing the party line, and not agreeing with their betters about what's good for them. Think of the administration's reaction to the tea parties, of their disdain for the huge numbers of people opposed to the disatrous health care bills, or their mockery of anyone who doesn't want to destroy the US economy in the service of dubious claims of climate disasters.
Obama hasn't stood up to any dictators because he sympathizes with them.

So ends 2009, the year of "engagement," of the extended hand, of the gratuitous apology -- and of spinning centrifuges, two-stage rockets and a secret enrichment facility that brought Iran materially closer to becoming a nuclear power.
