The ‘Risk’ of Being Poor

The main problem that needs to be addressed when talking about the poor is the RATE. Yes there are some hard working, decent people who are poor, but what percentage is it of all the poor? This is the key factor. Progressives would have us believe that nearly all the poor are unlucky good folks who just need a hand. Conservatives believe, and this is my experience, that the majority are screw ups, lazy, irresponsible people corrupted by the entitlement culture. I would like to see some hard data on these rates for all of us to study.

I think you could start with results of the Workfare program signed into law (reluctantly) by Bill Clinton. The predictions on the left were dire. People were going to die from want. Children would suffer. Etc. However, the results were just the opposite. Families who had become chronic recipients of welfare (generational) suddenly had an incentive to get up, get out, and get working. Nobody starved. Nobody died. And a lot of self-respect was rediscovered.

Instead of "Families", I should have said moms and dads of families . . . While I'm here, let me tell you that I heard a personal account of one such family as told by the son. He watched his mom -- a welfare mom from a long line of welfare recipients -- get pushed by the Workfare program to get a job. She could only land a janitorial position at a local hospital, but she did it and worked hard. He remembers the first time she received a paycheck for her work. Her face lit up with pride. She now holds a better job, managed to put her son through college, and has never regretted getting off of welfare. He's proud of her and learned the value of work from her experience.
Please stand back. I’ve been waiting for day to say this; waiting to calm down enough that my keystrokes won’t break the keyboard. I heard some lady say something on TV, and seldom have I heard a more idiotic statement from someone in a position to know better … I mean this is so magnificently ignorant – even stupid – that if this woman’s ignorance were radioactive Democrats could build the mother of all nuclear brain bombs. Just one could wipe out all intelligent life on Earth.

The woman we’re talking about is Melissa Harris-Perry. Apparently she has a...
