The Electoral College, Under Attack

Our founders were educated men, who new the history of republics and democracies -- up to their time, none had succeeded. The founders, in establishing the electorial college, were mindful of ancient Rome's "capite censi," that were the power base for Julius Gaius to become Caesar, emperor. Julius ended the republican form of government, immediately. He became emperor/dictator. Oh, you should know that the "capite censi" referred to Roman citizens who owned nothing -- popularly known as "the head count." That is why we have an electorial college, and not "popular vote."

Your comment is too condensed here. You don't say how our Electorial College could prevent a "Caesar" in the U.S. Obama has pretty much become a dictator. Neither the E.C. nor Congress has had the will to stop him.

Btw, the guys casting the E.C. votes are just as afraid of the wrath of the people as are our Congressmen. If you are looking to them to go against the wind in the case of a dictator, you have your hopes pinned in the wrong place.

Julius Gaius Caesar governed by edict. Does that not put you in mind of somebody?

1960 -- I soon expect to hear "in vulgus" demand an American "dictator imperpetuo"

"quod di vos protegant"

As Tuesday’s election ticks ever nearer, my fervent wish is a solid electoral college win for Mitt Romney. Not to get greedy, but I’d like it in the bag before the wee hours of Wednesday morning.

I hope this is not asking too much. October’s poll swing and a broadening visceral sense tell me this election may not feature the nail-biting closeness we have been told to expect for months.

But if we are to be ensnared by a down-to-the-wire finish, get ready for the attendant micro-focus on the Electoral College, and the resulting debate over whether it should...
