A woman rides her bicycle past the cooling towers of a coal-burning power station on a hazy day in Beijing October 21, 2008. China's greenhouse gas pollution is likely to double or more in two decades, according to a new Chinese state thinktank study that casts stark light on the rising industrial giant's role in stoking global warming. Beijing has not released recent official data on greenhouse gas pollution from the nation's fast-growing use of coal, oil and gas. Researchers abroad estimate its emissions now rival the United States', long the biggest greenhouse gas polluter. But in a break with official reticence, a team of researchers from Chinese state science institutes has concluded that without major counter-measures, the country's emissions are likely to tower over others' even faster than an earlier official forecast.
