Nelson Mandela passed away on December 5. He is well-known for his anti-apartheid activism, which included over 27 years in prison. Mandela was both the first black and the first democratically elected president of South Africa. Although he was a controversial figure for much of his lifetime, Mandela was widely celebrated in South Africa and was awarded many honors by the international community, including the Nobel Peace Prize and the US Presidential Medal of Freedom.
