FILE - In this Oct. 19, 2008 file photo provided by Alisa Schulman-Janiger, a 46-foot juvenile fin whale that was struck by a cargo ship and carried into the Long Beach harbor is seen in Long Beach, Calif. Large vessels traveling in and out of ports off the California coast will begin using new traffic lanes on Saturday, June 1, 2013, developed to protect whales from ship collisions. The new lanes change traffic into and out of San Francisco Bay, the Santa Barbara Channel and the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach in an effort to steer ships away from where whales congregate.
