FILE - In this Aug. 16, 2008 file photo provided by John Calambokidis, a blue whale is shown near a cargo ship in the Santa Barbara Channel off the California coast. Large vessels traveling in and out of ports off the California coast will begin using new traffic lanes on Saturday, June 1, 2013, developed to protect whales from ship collisions. The new lanes change traffic into and out of San Francisco Bay, the Santa Barbara Channel and the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach in an effort to steer ships away from where whales congregate.
