The Interior Ministry said Friday Aug. 10, 2012 Spanish police working in a joint investigation with the FBI's Boston Division have halted an attempt by a major Mexican drug smuggling ring to establish a European operation. Four alleged members of the Sinaloa cartel, including Jesus Gutierrez Guzman, a cousin of "the biggest drug trafficker in the world,” Joaquín Archivaldo Guzman Loera known as "El Chapo" have been arrested in Madrid a statement says. The statement Friday said Spain was to have been used by the cartel as a gateway for drug importation and distribution throughout Europe but investigators intercepted a container carrying 373 kilos (822 pounds) of cocaine in July, leading to the arrests.
