A farmer digs a hole to prepare a reservoir of water in Nova Palmares in the state of Bahia June 11, 2012. Water reservoirs remained empty for weeks and nearly 300 towns declared a state of emergency in the state of Bahia alone during the month of May. Although there has been some rainfall over the past days, small farmers in the region are still struggling to recover what they lost during the dry period. The situation in the northeast is one of the many climate issues on the agenda of this month's UN Rio+20 sustainable development summit in Rio de Janeiro. The Rio+20 conference is expected to attract some 50,000 participants this month. The official summit will take place from June 20 to 22. Picture taken on June 11, 2012.
