Soldiers destroy poppy plants used to make heroin during an operation in Sierra de Culiacan in the state of Sinaloa December 8, 2011. High above Mexico's drug-producing heartland, Mexican soldiers are combing the fertile fields of the northwestern state of Sinaloa in search of the billion-dollar poppy and marijuana farms that litter the region. Due to its close proximity to the United States and the cheap availability of the plants, Mexico is rivaling Afghanistan as the world leader in heroin production and is already the main supplier of marijuana to its northern neighbour.
