Muslims take part in the first Friday prayers of the Holy month of Ramadan in Rome's mosque September 5, 2008. Historically a bridge between East and West where Christianity and Islam met, Italy is still giving many Muslims their first glimpse of Europe -- and a foretaste of the mistrust with which many Europeans view their religion. If the anti-immigrant Northern League gets its way -- and as a partner of Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, it probably will -- Italy will soon have a new law effectively blocking the construction of new mosques in much of the country.
