PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — Construction crews in Haiti are building what is expected to be the country's first four-star branded hotel.
The $45 million Marriott hotel is expected to create some 200 jobs and open in early 2015. It will feature 175 rooms and will be located in Port-au-Prince.
The hotel is one of several planned for the capital and surrounding areas as Haiti tries to recover from a devastating 2010 earthquake that officials say killed 300,000 people.
Digicel Group Chairman Denis O'Brien said at a groundbreaking event Wednesday that he believes the hotel will help attract more foreign visitors. The company is an investor in the project.
Marriott International CEO and President Arne Sorenson said the company also is working with Haiti's tourism and education officials to improve hospitality training.
