What do you think of John McCain's selection of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate?

Showers and thunderstorms were forecast Thursday for the central Plains as a cold front moves through the region. The storms could produce damaging winds, hail and possibly tornadoes. Flooding was also a threat for some areas.

The cold front was expected to move into the Northeast, triggering showers and storms for that region as well. Severe thunderstorms were possible from the Ohio Valley through New England.

Seasonable thunderstorms were forecast for the Southeast, and thunderstorms also were projected for the Pacific Northwest.

Dry, hot weather was expected to continue in the Southwest. Temperatures were likely to be in the 90s and 100s, with the hottest areas reaching 110.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a low of 37 degrees at Bigfork, Minn., to a high of 111 degrees at Phoenix.
