Former publisher of UT San Diego dies in car crash

SAN DIEGO (AP) — UT San Diego says its former owner and publisher David Copley has died after a car accident near his home in La Jolla.The newspaper ( ) says the 60-year-old Copley died at Scripps Memorial hospital Tuesday night about three hours after paramedics pulled him from his wrecked Aston Martin sports car.Copley's friend Dr. Robert Singer announced the death outside the hospital. Copley was alone in the car. The cause was not clear.Copley was owner and publisher of the paper then known as the San Diego Union-Tribune, the dominant newspaper in the nation's eighth-largest city from 2001 until 2009, when it was sold to a private equity firm.The Copley family owned the newspaper for 81 years and its name is on many of the city's cultural institutions.___Information from: U-T San Diego,
