NEW YORK (AP) — A New York federal appeals court says a Manhattan judge overstepped his authority when he tried to ban enforcement of an $18 billion judgment against Chevron Inc. for environmental damage in Ecuador.The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals issued an opinion on Thursday explaining why it decided last September to lift a lower court's ban on collection of the judgment.An appeals court in Ecuador has since upheld the judgment. Attorneys say they will eventually begin trying to collect against Chevron around the world.The appeals court decided the New York judge went beyond his authority when he said Ecuador could not try to collect its judgment in other countries.The award had followed nearly two decades of litigation.Chevron didn't immediately respond to a message seeking comment.
