MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Memphis is getting ready to hold its mayoral election this week and incumbent A C Wharton is the clear front-runner.Wharton has guided the gritty city through a $60 million budget deficit, a school funding battle and a historic Mississippi River flood. His mediation skills and low-key demeanor have helped him maintain his support during the past two years. He faces two main competitors in the election Thursday and he is leading in polls by big margins.Wharton has faced criticism over whether to privatize the city's sanitation department and city workers were upset when he and Council pushed through a 4.6 percent pay cut.Wharton won a special election in 2009 to replace Willie Herenton, the city's first elected black mayor who resigned after 18 years in office.
