LOS ANGELES (AP) — Criminal justice, religious and civil rights leaders are requesting a broader federal investigation into allegations of abuse in Los Angeles County jails.The letter requests "a thorough criminal and pattern or practice civil rights investigation" into allegations made by the American Civil Liberties Union. It was released by the ACLU Thursday.The letter was signed by 26 people, including former California Attorney General John Van de Kamp and former Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas M. Brown.The ACLU Wednesday demanded the resignation of Sheriff Lee Baca over the allegations. He said he has no intention of stepping down.
