A chronology of developments in the sexting scandal that led to the resignation of Rep. Anthony Weiner, a Democrat representing part of New York City:
Friday, May 27:
Weiner uses his Twitter account to send a waist-down photograph of a man's underwear-clad crotch to a 21-year-old female college student in Seattle. He quickly deletes it and tweets that his Facebook account was hacked.
Sunday, May 29:
The photo just "a distraction" perpetrated by a hacker, spokesman Dave Arnold says. "He doesn't know the person named by the hacker, and we will be consulting on what steps to take next."
Wednesday, June 1:
Weiner tells MSNBC that he cannot say "with certitude" whether the photo of a man's underpants was of him and says he didn't report it to Capitol police because "I'm not really sure it rises, no pun intended, to that level."
Monday, June 6:
_ After a blog posts shirtless photos the congressman purportedly sent to a second woman, Weiner tearfully apologizes at a news conference, admits to sending the underwear photo and lying about it, and engaging in inappropriate contact with six women on the Internet and over the phone. "This was me doing a dumb thing, and doing it repeatedly, and lying about it," he says.
_ House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi calls for a House ethics investigation.
Wednesday, June 8:
_ An X-rated photo Weiner purportedly took of himself surfaces on a website.
_ News breaks that Weiner's wife of less than a year, Huma Abedin, an aide to Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, is pregnant. Rep. Allyson Schwartz, D-Pa., becomes the first of several House Democrats to say he should leave office.
Friday, June 10:
Weiner acknowledges he exchanged online messages with a 17-year-old girl in Delaware but says nothing improper happened.
Saturday, June 11:
Weiner announces plans for a temporary leave of absence from the House and to seek unspecified treatment.
President Barack Obama says on NBC's "Today" show: "I think he's embarrassed himself. He's acknowledged that. He's embarrassed his wife and his family. Ultimately, there's going to be a decision for him and his constituents. I can tell you that, if it was me, I would resign."
Former porn actress Ginger Lee says she exchanged about 100 emails and messages over a four-month period with Weiner and says he asked her to lie about their communications.
Weiner resigns, apologizing to his neighbors, constituents and wife for his "personal mistakes" and "the embarrassment" he caused. He says he's resigning "so my colleagues can get back to work, my neighbors can choose a new representative and, most importantly, that my wife and I can continue to heal from the damage I have caused."
