A partial government shutdown is looming at week’s end
House Speaker Mike Johnson is looking to schedule a vote tomorrow (TUE) on the 99-page bill, with a view to Democrats responsible for a potential partial government shutdown. He’ll again need total GOP support to thread the needle. Congress must act by Friday midnight. when the current continuing resolution expires. House Republicans unveiled a spending bill Saturday that would keep federal agencies funded through September 30th. Trump praised the bill, posting on his Truth Social platform that Republicans have to “remain UNITED — NO DISSENT —.”

Trump defends Justice Barrett against MAGA criticism
President Trump is defending Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett. Some of the president’s MAGA supporters have stepped up their criticism of Barrett after she has broken with other conservative justices on some issues. But Donald Trump, who nominated Barrett during his first term, supports the justice. Barrett voted to reject the Trump administration’s attempt to freeze nearly two billion dollars in foreign aid, which sparked criticism among some of the president’s allies

House Republicans work to pass spending bill and avert government shutdown
The 99-page bill is certain to spark confrontation on Capitol Hill. It would provide a slight boost to defense programs while trimming nondefense programs below 2024 budget year levels. That approach is likely to be a nonstarter for most Democrats who have long insisted that defense and nondefense spending move in the same direction. Congress must act by midnight Friday to avoid a partial government shutdown. Speaker Mike Johnson is teeing up the bill for a vote on Tuesday despite the lack of buy-in from Democrats, essentially daring them to vote against it and risk a shutdown. He also is betting that Republicans can muscle the legislation through the House largely by themselves.

The state of Washington may vote on an abortion amendment
The state of Washington may vote on an abortion amendment
VERBATIM: Democrats have introduced a measure that would enshrine both abortion in the state constitution as well as a right to a sex-change operation. In order for the amendment to be placed before a vote of the people, it will have to pass both chambers of the Washington legislature by a two-thirds margin. Observers say it’s going to be a big lift for Democrats — they don’t currently have the votes and would have to convince several Republicans to vote with them. MH SRNN NEWS.
