Mo. ex-speaker accused of assault to close firm

An attorney says a former Missouri House speaker plans to withdraw from politics altogether after he was accused of assaulting a woman during a sexual encounter.

Rod Jetton was charged Monday in southeast Missouri's Scott County with felony second-degree assault. The Cole County Sheriff's Department in Jefferson City says Jetton turned himself in Monday and has been released on $2,500 bond.

The 42-year-old Republican was elected to the House in 2000 and served as speaker from 2005 to 2008. He has since worked as a political consultant in Jefferson City.

His attorney, Steve Wilson, said in a Tuesday statement that Jetton planned to close his consultancy this month so he can deal with the allegations and spend time with his family.
