Defense leads No. 6 Purdue past C. Michigan 64-38

Purdue's staunch defense was too good for Central Michigan.

E'Twaun Moore scored 15 points and Robbie Hummel had 11 points and 11 rebounds, leading the No. 6 Boilermakers to a 64-38 rout Saturday.

It certainly wasn't the kind of performance Boilermakers (5-0) fans expected after beating Tennessee earlier this week, though. Purdue's offense looked stale after a four-day layoff, shooting just 40.9 percent from the field in the first half and 31.2 percent for the game from 3-point range.

Finis Craddock had eight points for Central Michigan, which has lost three straight. The Chippewas (2-4) were Mid-American Conference West Division co-champs last season and are the preseason favorites in the division this season.

Purdue still brought enough defensive tenacity to prevent Central Michigan from having a chance. The Chippewas went four long stretches without a basket _ spans consuming 6 minutes, 26 seconds, 8:10, 5:17 and 6:41. They shot just 28.3 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from 2-point range.

That combination was too much for the Chippewas.

Purdue used a 9-0 run in the first half to break open a 9-9 game, then took control late in the half by forcing four straight turnovers and outscoring the Chippewas 11-0 over the last 5:53 to make it 29-14.

Things didn't get any better early in the second half for the Chippewas.

Central Michigan closed to 29-17 on Craddock's driving, spinning layup, with 17:58 to go, ending the 8:10 drought. Purdue countered with a 7-3 mini-run to make it 36-20, then used a 10-0 spurt midway through the second half. Central Michigan never got closer than 19 the rest of the way.

It was the lowest point total for the Chippewas since Ernie Zeigler took over as coach in 2006-07.
