A partial government shutdown is looming at week’s end
House Speaker Mike Johnson is looking to schedule a vote tomorrow (TUE) on the 99-page bill, with a view to Democrats responsible for a potential partial government shutdown. He’ll again need total GOP support to thread the needle. Congress must act by Friday midnight. when the current continuing resolution expires. House Republicans unveiled a spending bill Saturday that would keep federal agencies funded through September 30th. Trump praised the bill, posting on his Truth Social platform that Republicans have to “remain UNITED — NO DISSENT —.”

Chief Justice Roberts rejects Trump’s call to impeach judges
Chief Justice John Roberts is rejecting President Trump’s calls to impeach judges who disagree with his policies. In a rare statement of rebuke, the chief justice said “For more than two centuries, it has been established that impeachment is not an appropriate response to disagreement concerning a judicial decision.” Roberts issued his statement just hours after a social media post from Donald Trump, who
described a federal judge as a “troublemaker,” “agitator,” and “radical left lunatic” who “should be impeached.” The judge had blocked deportation flights being carried out under an 18th century law.

DOJ Launches Election Investigation
WASHINGTON (AP) – The top federal prosecutor for the nation’s capital has formed a “special unit” to investigate election offenses, according to an email sent to lawyers in his office on Monday.

VERBATIM: Interim District of Columbia U.S. Attorney Ed Martin said the “Special Unit: Election Accountability” has already opened one investigation and that it “will continue to make sure that all the election laws of our nation are obeyed,” according to the email reviewed by media. Martin was involved in the “Stop the Steal” movement after President Trump lost the 2020 election to former President Joe Biden.
The Trump administration had been expected to shift the Justice Department’s priorities around investigating voting and elections. The agency has historically targeted voter suppression efforts and state laws that could disenfranchise certain groups, but conservatives have called for an increased focus on voter fraud.
