DENVER (AP) — A search was underway Tuesday for a man accused of wearing a sheriff's deputy jacket to escape from Denver's jail, allegedly with a deputy's help.
Felix Trujillo, 24, was awaiting sentencing in a home invasion when he escaped Sunday night.
Investigators on Monday searched for Trujillo at a home in Thornton, north of Denver, but turned up no sign of him.
Court records show Trujillo was charged with escape in Adams County in 2011 but pleaded guilty to attempted escape and was sentenced to six months in jail.
Deputy Matthew Andrews, 36, is accused of assisting the escape, a class-three felony. He was arrested Monday at Denver police headquarters.
Denver Sheriff Department spokesman Maj. Frank Gale said Trujillo was wearing a deputy's uniform jacket when he escaped. No other details were released, and authorities haven't said if the jacket was Andrews'.
Andrews' bond was set at $10,000. Jail records show the two-year veteran of the Denver Sheriff Department has been released from custody.
It wasn't immediately clear if Andrews has an attorney, and he couldn't be located for comment.
Lynn Kimbrough, spokeswoman for the Denver district attorney's office, said Tuesday that Trujillo was in jail for sentencing after he pleaded guilty to burglary with a weapon. Trujillo was facing 16 to 24 years in prison at a sentencing hearing scheduled for May 13.
Denver police are trying to determine what motive Andrews might have had for helping Trujillo escape. Sheriff's officials say Andrews underwent a background check before he was hired.
Officials from the Denver Police Department and Denver Sheriff Department did not return calls seeking comment.
Andrews is scheduled to appear in court April 22.
