FREETOWN, Sierra Leone (AP) — Sierra Leone's main opposition party is calling on its 42 deputies in Parliament to boycott proceedings in protest over the recent presidential election, which gave an overwhelming victory to the ruling party.
The Sierra Leone People's Party, or SLPP, said in a statement issued Tuesday that the party calls on its lawmakers, as well as its mayors and councilors in local government to abstain from taking part until further notice.
The party says it wants to have an independent international assessment of the electoral process, which gave a resounding victory to incumbent President Ernest Bai Koroma in the Nov. 17 election.
The statement deplores what the party says is the election commissions' unwillingness to address electoral irregularities that undermined the credibility of the results.
