Marion Barry wins primary for DC Council seat

Former District of Columbia Mayor Marion Barry has easily won a Democratic primary for his D.C. Council seat, virtually assuring him of a third consecutive term representing the poorest of the city's wards.

Preliminary results in the city's Ward 8 show Barry with 73 percent of the vote, with 100 percent of precincts reporting. He easily fended off four Democratic challengers.

A former four-term mayor, the 76-year-old Barry has only lost one election in his career _ in 1990, after he had been sentenced to six months in federal prison on a drug charge.
